Tragedy on B1222: 21-Year-Old Dies After Car Plunges Into Water Channel
Police are hunting for witnesses after a 21-year-old man from Barnsley lost his life in a shocking crash on the B1222 near Sherburn-in-Elmet. The green Renault Clio he was travelling in veered off the road shortly after 10.30pm on Monday, 27 December, and ended up submerged in a water channel known as Bishop Dyke.
One Dead, One Seriously Injured in Late-Night Crash
The car was heading towards Sherburn-in-Elmet along Bishopdyke Road when it left the road near New Lennerton Lane junction. The 21-year-old died instantly at the scene. Another man, also in his 20s, suffered serious injuries and was rushed to hospital.
Police Urge Witnesses and Dashcam Owners to Come Forward
Officers are appealing to anyone driving or walking in the area around the time of the crash who may have seen the green Renault Clio, or any other vehicles nearby. They are especially keen to hear from those with dashcam footage leading up to or capturing the collision.
“If you were in the area or have any footage, please contact North Yorkshire Police immediately,” said a spokesperson. “Your information could be vital in our investigation.”

Road Closure Causes Disruption Until Morning
Emergency services closed the B1222 to deal with the incident and allow investigators to examine the crash scene. The road reopened at around 11am the next day.
