Tragic Babbs Mill Lake Ice Deaths Remembered in Heartfelt Carol Service

The West Midlands Fire Service held a touching carol service at St Martin-in-the-Bullring on Sunday, December 10. The event marked the grim anniversary of four young boys drowning at Babbs Mill Lake in Kingshurst, Solihull, exactly one year ago.

Four Young Lives Lost on Frozen Lake

The victims were brothers Samuel Butler, six, and Finlay Butler, eight, their 11-year-old cousin Thomas Butler, plus friend Jack Johnson, aged 10. They tragically fell through the ice on the frozen lake on December 11, 2022. Chief Fire Officer Wayne Brown spoke of deep sorrow for the boys’ families, the community, and fire crews affected by the tragedy.

Firefighters Recall Harrowing Rescue Attempt

Area Manager Martin Ward-White, who was at the scene last year, recalled the horror and risks firefighters faced during the rescue. He urged urgent education for children, parents, and pet owners about the deadly dangers of thin ice.

“Think Twice, Stay Off The Ice” – Life-Saving Advice

West Midlands Fire Service used the service to hammer home their vital ice safety message: “Think twice, stay off the ice.” They called on schools, parents, and pet owners to spread the word and help prevent further heartbreak.

The service also shared crucial survival tips if someone falls through ice:

  • Stay calm and do not panic
  • Spread your arms out across the ice surface to distribute weight
  • Try to pull yourself towards the shore
  • Seek immediate medical attention after escape

Bystanders should call 999 instantly and only attempt a rescue if it’s safe to do so.

The tribute was a solemn reminder of the ongoing need for vigilance around frozen water. The community continues to mourn Samuel, Finlay, Thomas, and Jack – young lives lost far too soon to the hidden dangers of winter ice.
