Biggin Hill’s Charles Darwin School Shuts Down After Ransomware Attack

Charles Darwin School in Biggin Hill has been forced to shut its doors after a serious ransomware cyber-attack crippled its IT systems. The school, based on Jail Lane, initially reported tech glitches before confirming the full-blown hack.

Data Breach Horror – What’s at Risk?

Headteacher Aston Smith revealed it’s still unclear what data hackers have accessed. “The potential exists for all school-held information to be compromised,” he warned. Ransomware is malware that locks systems down, demanding cash before restoring access.

School Closed for Three Days as Cleanup Begins

Charles Darwin School will remain closed from Monday, September 9 until Wednesday, September 11. During this time, staff devices will be cleaned and IT systems rebuilt from scratch. Teachers will also take the chance to re-plan lessons, while senior staff work on new systems to keep the school running smoothly.

Investigation Underway, Parents Warned to Stay Alert

A specialist cyber security firm is now conducting a forensic investigation. The school has reported the breach to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO), which is carrying out a full data impact assessment. Mr Smith reassured parents that external cloud services like Parent Pay remain secure and untouched by the attack.

“Safeguarding remains our top priority. Please be vigilant for suspicious emails – we will NOT send any attachments or links during this recovery phase,” said Mr Smith.

As a precaution, all student Microsoft 365 accounts have been disabled. Communication will now happen through Satchel One, so parents and students are urged to check the platform regularly for updates and assignments.

Cyber Attacks on the Rise in UK Public Sector

This strike on Charles Darwin School comes amid a wave of cyber-attacks hitting vital UK services, including the NHS, Transport for London, and National Rail. The rising threat shows no sign of slowing.

Mr Smith thanked parents for their patience and promised regular updates as more info emerges. For urgent matters, parents should contact the school by phone — email is currently down.
