Devon and Somerset Fire Service Seeks Council Tax Views Amid Bold Safety Plans

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Authority is asking locals to have their say on council tax as it sets its budget for the year. Each year, the Authority weighs up options showing what a tax rise—or freeze—means for the vital service.

Funding the Fire Fight

The Fire Service is funded through a mix of a government grant, a council tax precept, and business rates. As a combined authority, it sets its own budget separate from other local councils.

Running 83 fire stations with around 2,000 staff, the Service protects 1.7 million residents plus thousands of visitors across the counties. The firefighters attend roughly 16,400 emergencies yearly—from fires and floods to road crashes.

Modernising to Save Lives

Ambitious plans to cut preventable incidents are underway. Recent years have seen a ramp-up in prevention and protection efforts, keeping homes and businesses safer.

  • Brixham fire station rebuild is well underway, set to open early 2021.
  • Plymstock’s new station has planning permission with work starting this winter.
  • Refurbishments at Wellington and bridgwater/" title="Bridgwater" data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">Bridgwater will upgrade staff facilities.

Next year, expect more investment in stations, new vehicles, and recruitment drives to boost firefighters on call and full-time.

What the Chair Says

“We have to balance community needs with the funding we get from government and residents,” said Authority Chair Sara Randall Johnson.

“Our goal is the best possible service by focusing on preventing incidents while being ready to respond when emergencies strike.”

“We want residents to tell us what council tax level works for them so we can decide accordingly.”

Have Your Say

Running the Service costs about £43.91 per person annually, with the current Band D council tax charge at £88.24 a year. The Authority invites feedback on next year’s council tax precept and satisfaction with the fire service.
