Man Jailed Over Vandalism of Manchester Arena Memorial
A 24-year-old man has been sentenced for defacing the Glade of Light memorial in Manchester city centre.
Anwar Hosseni Gets Community Order for Memorial Damage
Anwar Hosseni, from Salford, was handed a two-year community order at Manchester Crown Court. His sentence includes a 12-month mental health treatment plan and a 10-day activity programme. On top of this, a two-year Criminal Behaviour Order was imposed to prevent any repeat offences.
Glade of Light: A Sacred Tribute Defaced
The Glade of Light memorial honours the 22 victims of the 2017 Manchester Arena terror attack. It’s a solemn site, cherished by families still grieving the devastating loss.
Damage was first reported by a family member of one of the victims, who spotted markings etched into the marble halo of the memorial. Police quickly responded and found clear evidence of vandalism.
Evidence and Impact of the Damage
The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) presented photos and CCTV footage showing Hosseni causing the damage at around 2 a.m. on February 8, 2022. Although Hosseni admitted the offence, he claimed his intentions were to express love, unity, and gratitude—not to offend.
Repairs have since been completed, costing nearly £11,000.
“We take this upset very personally as the memorial represents our daughter and her boyfriend along with 20 others who were murdered in Manchester. We hoped her death would be respected by all and it’s more sadness and hurt we can do without,” said a victim’s family member in a heartfelt statement.
Caroline Wilbraham, Senior Crown Prosecutor with CPS North West, condemned the act. “I am shocked anyone would harm this memorial, knowing what it stands for. It is a vital tribute to those who lost their lives in that tragic attack five years ago.”
The swift admission of guilt helped bring the case to a close. “The CPS will vigorously prosecute those who commit heinous crimes affecting the entire community,” she added.
