Room Ad Rape Horror: Man Locked Up for 15 Years
A 37-year-old man has been jailed for raping a woman after a fake room rental offer lured her into danger in Northampton.
Deceptive Coffee Date Turned Nightmare
In early 2019, Ion Cojan posted an online ad for a spare room in Northampton. A woman responded, and they arranged to meet on February 17 in the town centre for what she thought was a coffee meeting.
But instead of heading to a café, Cojan drove to Delapre Park, parked near the lake on Ransome Road, and raped her in the back of his car. He then drove her back to town.
Brave Victim Helps Police Nail Rapist
The victim courageously reported the attack to Northamptonshire Police. Detectives launched a thorough investigation using witness statements, forensic evidence, online profiles, CCTV, and ANPR camera footage.
These combined efforts led to Cojan’s arrest and charge with rape. He was found guilty at Northampton Crown Court in September and sentenced on November 10 to 15 years behind bars.
“While no sentence will undo the trauma, I’m pleased this man will spend a significant period in prison,” said Detective Constable David Burrage. “The victim showed immense bravery throughout, and her courage ensures a rapist is off the streets.”
Police Urge Victims to Speak Out
Northamptonshire Police say they take all reports of sexual assault seriously and promise sensitive, confidential support. They urge victims to call 101 or use their online portal at 123 for confidential help anytime.
