Pilot Busted Smuggling Migrants in Private Plane at Northamptonshire Airfield
Airborne Immigration Sting
Richard Styles from St Albans was arrested in March 2022 at Deenethorpe Airfield near Corby, Northamptonshire, during a daring NCA operation. He had just flown in a twin-engine Piper Seneca from Belgium, smuggling three men and a woman trying to dodge immigration checks.
Co-Pilot and Network Uncovered
Investigators discovered Styles teamed up with fellow aviation enthusiast and former pilot Silvano Turchet, 68. Together, they rented the six-seater aircraft from a Lincolnshire airfield for £1,500. The illegal passengers were allegedly connected to an Albanian handler known only as ‘Tim K,’ who arranged for them to board the flight in Belgium.
Swift Justice Delivered
The day after the flight, an NCA surveillance team swooped as the plane touched down. Styles was arrested on the spot. Meanwhile, the smuggled migrants were detained shortly after in a Mercedes taxi driven by Vijayakumar Sivakumar. All three men faced charges of facilitating immigration breaches.
- Styles was sentenced to seven years in prison
- Turchet received seven and a half years
- Sivakumar was handed four and a half years
NCA Cracks Down on People Smuggling
“People smugglers use countless tricks to breach UK borders,” said an NCA spokesperson. “Stopping them is a top priority, and we are committed to dismantling organised immigration crime networks.”
