Brutal Bottle Attack: Burglar Jailed for Nine Years After Violent Home Invasion
Darren Rose, 29, a homeless man, has been sentenced to nine years in prison for a savage aggravated burglary in Cowes. The attack happened in the early hours of 26 October 2019, when Rose burst into a home on Cross Street armed with bottles at around 5.30am.
Victims Suffer Serious Injuries in Shocking Assault
Rose woke a man inside the house before smashing a bottle over his head, Portsmouth Crown Court heard. The pair knew each other. The attacker then used a second bottle to deliver further blows. When a courageous woman tried to stop him by jumping on his back, Rose shrugged her off – and hit her in the head with a bottle too, before fleeing the scene.
Both victims were seriously hurt and needed hospital treatment.
Original Seven-Year Sentence Increased After Appeal
Rose was arrested the same day and charged with aggravated burglary and grievous bodily harm with intent. Initially, he was jailed for seven years on 9 October 2020.
But the Solicitor General challenged the sentence, calling it unduly lenient. On 4 November 2021, the Court of Appeal agreed and upped Rose’s sentence to nine years behind bars.
Detective Constable Mark Thomas said: “This was a violent incident for which Rose has rightly been punished. I hope the victims in this case can move forward, and the community feel reassured that police and criminal justice partners do not tolerate this level of violence.”
