Couple Jailed for Poisoning Child with Cocaine and Amphetamines

Guilty Verdict After Child Hospitalised

Kerry-Anne Baldry, 49, from Southsea, and Darren Barden, 50, of East Grinstead, have been found guilty of causing unnecessary suffering to a child in their care. The pair was sentenced on Friday, January 13, following a jury’s guilty verdict on November 18.

Child’s Life Put at Risk with Dangerous Drugs

Back in 2016, while living in East Grinstead, the duo’s victim was rushed to hospital suffering respiratory distress. Toxicology tests shockingly revealed the presence of cocaine and amphetamines in the child’s bloodstream, causing serious and lasting harm.

Prison Sentences for Negligence

  • Baldry was locked up for two years and eight months.
  • Barden received a longer term of three years and four months.

Detective Slams Couple’s Recklessness

This has been a very distressing case,” said Detective Constable Michelle Hayes from West Sussex Safeguarding Investigations Unit. “The victim was exposed to a toxic environment due to the irresponsibility of Baldry and Barden. Both were equally accountable and failed to grasp the danger they posed. The child now faces life-changing injuries that will impact their quality of life. I am relieved that justice has been served.”
