Mini Cooper Crash Horror: Provisional Driver Flees Leaving Passenger Critically Injured
Reece Page lost control of a Mini Cooper on Polegate Road, Hailsham, smashing into a brick wall. The 27-year-old, holding only a provisional licence and flaunting the law by not displaying L plates, fled the scene, leaving a 22-year-old passenger trapped with life-changing injuries.
Emergency Rescue and Court Drama
Firefighters rushed to the crash site, carefully extracting the injured man before rushing him to hospital. Page was nowhere to be seen.
At Lewes Crown Court, Page pleaded guilty to causing serious injury by dangerous driving. He was handed a hefty prison sentence of three years and nine months and banned from driving for nearly six years.
Reckless Joyride Turns Nightmare
- The crash happened just after 1am on February 26, 2022.
- Page, unemployed and from Station Road, Hailsham, had been drinking at JD Wetherspoon’s pub in town.
- He took the keys of a car that wasn’t his and decided to drive without permission.
- After crashing, he bolted, leaving his passenger in dire straits.
Police Slam ‘Reckless and Selfish’ Driver
“Page’s actions were reckless and selfish,” said PC Lloyd Archer from the Roads Policing Unit. “He showed no regard for his passenger who has been left with life-changing injuries. “Outside the pub, he was warned by a friend not to drive, and he had no permission to use the car. “But Page ignored these warnings, leading to devastating consequences.”
“He put himself, his passenger, and other road users at serious risk. Page will now pay the price from his prison cell. We’re glad this dangerous driver is off our roads.”
