Drink-Driver Jailed After Horrific Wrong-Way M6 Crash Leaves Three Seriously Injured

Moses Khombe’s motorway nightmare

Moses Khombe, 41, from Dunstable, was slammed with a prison term yesterday at Preston Crown Court. The dad-of-one was locked up for two years and eight months after a terrifying wrong-way crash on the M6 left three people badly hurt. On top of that, he’s been banned from driving for four years and five months and must retake an extended driving test before he can get back on the road. Plus, he’s been ordered to pay costs to his victims.

Crash carnage on the M6

The horror unfolded just before 10.30pm on March 15th near Charnock Richard services. Khombe, who had been boozing at a friend’s home in Stoke-on-Trent, got behind the wheel drunk and accidentally headed northbound on the motorway instead of south, trying to get home to Bedfordshire.

Realising his mistake, Khombe made a deadly decision to attempt a U-turn across three lanes of fast-moving traffic. He narrowly missed several vehicles before smashing into a Vauxhall Grandland traveling at 70mph.

Victims left seriously injured

  • All four people inside the Vauxhall were hurt – three seriously.
  • One passenger endured nearly two months in hospital and underwent three operations.
  • The others suffered broken bones and nasty bruises.
  • Khombe walked away unscathed.

Shockingly high booze level

Tests showed Khombe’s blood alcohol level was 203mg per 100ml — more than double the legal limit of 80mg. He later admitted to three counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, plus dangerous driving and drink-driving.

Police slam reckless behaviour

“Khombe’s actions were reckless, selfish and stupid and it is no exaggeration to say someone could have been killed that night,” said PC Jez Robbins from the TacOps team.

“He put countless lives at risk by making that U-turn and driving drunk. The victims will carry physical and mental scars for years.”

“I hope this sentence sends a clear message: drink-driving is never worth it.”
