Predator Youth Coach Found Guilty of Horrific Abuse

David Hughes, 66, from New Addington, has been convicted at Croydon Crown Court of 14 shocking sex offences against four boys aged between 8 and 15.

Systematic Abuse Spanning Decades

Hughes was found guilty of ten counts of indecent assault, two counts of sexual activity, and two counts of causing a boy to engage in sexual acts. The crimes stretch from 1988 to 2018, with the first offences committed during his time as a youth worker and volunteer football coach in New Addington. His predatory behaviour carried on long after his employment ended.

Grooming With Gifts and Trust Betrayed

  • Hughes lured victims with football boots and tops before assaulting them.
  • He took one boy to see Jurassic Park in 1993 and showered him with attention and gifts.
  • One victim was assaulted during a camping trip organised by Hughes.

Detective Constable Pete Brewster said: “Hughes’ offences reveal premeditated, predatory behaviour over nearly 30 years. He should have been a trusted figure but instead betrayed vulnerable children. The victims describe lasting trauma and were ashamed to speak out. It is thanks to their bravery in reporting abuse years later that justice is served.”

Arrest Uncovered More Disturbing Evidence

Hughes was arrested in December 2018 carrying a black holdall containing children’s underwear. Police also found more new underwear during a search of his home. He was charged in February 2020 and is due to be sentenced on 25 November.

If you have suffered abuse, no matter how long ago, please report it to the police. Help is available.
