Ex-MP Charlie Elphicke Jailed for Sexual Assault of Two Women
Former Tory MP Charlie Elphicke has been locked up for two years after being found guilty of sexually assaulting two women he knew professionally.
The 49-year-old, from St Margaret’s Bay, Dover, was sentenced on Tuesday, 15 September at Southwark Crown Court. His conviction followed a trial that began on 6 July, with the guilty verdict handed down on 30 July.
Unwanted Advances and Sexual Assaults Detailed in Court
Elphicke committed three sexual assaults against two victims. The first victim was attacked in her 30s in June 2007 at a Westminster residence. She only reported the incident to police ten years later, in November 2017.
The other two offences involved a woman in her 20s. In April 2016, he kissed her and groped her without consent. A month later, despite being told to stop, he touched her inappropriately again.
Elphicke denied wrongdoing when interviewed in 2018 but later admitted making advances, claiming he believed the younger woman was interested in him.
Victims Speak Out on Lasting Trauma
“The effect of what he did to me has had a lasting impact,” said the first victim. “I have a significantly increased sense of anxiety and caution when meeting or working with any man. It took me a long time to get back on my feet and be stable in my home and job again.”
The second victim revealed, “I remember feeling trapped, frightened and constantly on edge… My mental health suffered because of the emotional and psychological turmoil that he put me through. He abused his position of authority and left me with feelings of powerlessness and inferiority.”
Police Praise Victims’ Courage and Urge Reporting
Detective Sergeant Michael McInerney of the Met’s Complex Case Team praised the victims’ bravery. “Elphicke was persistent and showed no restraint. These were deeply distressing incidents that have severely affected their lives,” he said.
“I want to encourage anyone affected by non-recent sexual offences to come forward. Our specially trained teams will investigate fully and provide the support victims need.”
