Police Forensic Expert Jailed for Snoop on 3,000 Crime Scene Photos
Darren Collins, 56, a digital forensic specialist from Stafford, has been sentenced to three years in prison at Birmingham Crown Court. The veteran officer admitted misconduct in public office after illegally accessing over 3,000 sensitive images over nearly five years.
Shocking Abuse of Trust in Police HQ
The images Collins viewed and downloaded included official police photos of crime scenes and post-mortems. These were meant to serve as crucial evidence in criminal cases and inquests. Collins claimed he was studying the pictures to boost his knowledge and advance his career. But when colleagues raised red flags, an internal investigation uncovered the deceit.
Fast Fall From Grace
- Collins worked for the force for 18.5 years.
- He was arrested in March 2019 and immediately suspended.
- Dismissed for gross misconduct in March 2021, Collins was placed on the Police Barred List, banning him from policing jobs.
Force Condemns Collins’s Actions
Deputy Chief Constable Emma Barnett said: “Collins pleaded guilty to a serious criminal offence and today’s sentencing reflects that. I’m very sorry for the additional distress that Collins’ actions caused to the families of the victims involved. We expect the highest levels of honesty and integrity from all our officers and staff. Anyone who falls below these standards will be held to account.”
She added the force is pushing a “safe and open culture,” urging officers to report behaviour that breaches the Code of Ethics.
