Damien McCann Jailed After Sickening Confession
Damien McCann, 35, admitted raping the child between May 2016 and January 2019 at their Dalkeith, Midlothian home. Despite being caught, he claimed the girl was “happy” during the assaults. He has now been jailed for his crimes.
Mary McCann, 39, also faced charges but tragically took her own life in January 2020, the High Court in Glasgow heard last month.
Dark Web Horror and Distinctive Tattoos Give Him Away
Police initially raided the McCanns’ home over an indecent images investigation. They seized a phone and laptop, uncovering Damien’s use of the “dark web” to source extreme pornography.
Officers discovered horrific footage of the abuse. Damien was identified by his distinctive tattoos caught on camera.
“A female voice – identified as Mary McCann – can be heard encouraging him,” prosecutor Angela Gray revealed.
Detectives found 20 sickening clips of Damien raping the girl, the majority filmed by Mary. Damien admitted the abuse and confessed that he and Mary shared the videos via WhatsApp and watched them together for “sexual gratification.”

- Damien also admitted sexually assaulting another young child, including while she was asleep.
- He pleaded guilty to possessing and distributing indecent images, including bestiality.

Lady Scott told McCann at Edinburgh’s High Court: “Child rape is always an extremely serious offence, and here there are factors making your conduct even worse.”
She described the abuse as “planned and graphic” and highlighted how McCann even added musical soundtracks and titles to the videos before sharing them with Mary.
Had he not pleaded guilty, McCann would have faced 14 years behind bars. The judge also slapped him with a three-year supervision order and placed him indefinitely on the Sex Offenders’ Register, warning he could be recalled to prison for any licence breaches.
Police Respond to Sickening Abuse
Police acted after intelligence reported indecent images being uploaded online. The seizure of devices revealed damning evidence, including footage with Mary’s voice encouraging Damien, saying, “Tell her how much she will like it.”
McCann, who has prior convictions for violence but none for sexual crimes, is now deemed a high risk to reoffend sexually.
