Burglar Busted After Dramatic Co-op Raid in Bedlington
Mark Cranston, 25, has landed behind bars after smashing into the Co-op on Netherton Lane, Bedlington, on the evening of Saturday, March 25. The thief didn’t go it alone – a partner in crime also joined in, making off with stolen booze and meat.
Chase Ends with Police Dog Ace’s Heroics
After the robbery, Cranston fled on foot while his accomplice escaped by bike. Police swiftly swooped, deploying officers who tracked Cranston heading towards nearby woods. But the real star was Police Dog Ace, a three-year-old Dutch Herder, who picked up the scent and pursued the crook for over a mile, navigating forests and fences.
Ace’s hunt ended in a local housing estate where Cranston was caught hiding in a bush. Thanks to the dog’s nose and quick police work, all stolen goods were recovered.
Cranston Jailed and Praise for Police Team
Cranston, with no fixed address, admitted the burglary when he appeared before Bedlington magistrates on Monday. He was sentenced to 24 weeks in prison.
Chief Inspector Ian Cutty said: “This was a fantastic outcome with a burglar arrested, charged and jailed all within 48 hours. It was a real team effort by officers and our criminal justice partners. Swift justice against a brazen thief.”
“Police Dog Ace tracked Cranston’s movements for over a mile, leading officers straight to his uncomfortable hiding spot. I’m sure Ace earned extra treats after this shift.”
“We will continue to crack down on burglars and thank the public and businesses for their ongoing support.”
