Major Shake-Up Announced for Veterans’ Welfare Services

The Ministry of Defence (MOD) and the Office for Veterans’ Affairs (OVA) have launched a sweeping review of welfare services for UK veterans. This in-depth look aims to cut through red tape, spot gaps, and streamline support for those who’ve served.

Why Now? A Decade of Change Demands a Fresh Look

With huge strides in veterans’ care over the last ten years and the creation of the OVA, bosses say it’s time to check if current services are hitting the mark. The review will scrutinise everything from Veterans UK’s one-to-one support to the Defence Transition Service that helps troops adjust back to civilian life.

Top Brass Speak Out on Veterans’ Welfare

Johnny Mercer, Minister for Veterans’ Affairs, said: “Supporting veterans to access appropriate support is critical to making the UK the best country in the world to be a veteran. This review will help us align services more closely with veterans’ needs and improve the quality of support.”

Dr Andrew Murrison, Minister for Defence People, Veterans and Service Families, added: “We’re eternally grateful for our veterans’ service and owe them the best support possible. This review isn’t criticism of current hardworking teams but a commitment to keep improving for veterans and their families.”

This new review will complement the ongoing Quinquennial Review of the Armed Forces Compensation Scheme.

How the Review Will Work

An independent civil servant will lead the review, backed by a joint team from the MOD and Cabinet Office. They’ll dive into organisational performance, identify inefficiencies, and work closely with charities, veterans’ groups, and government departments.

The review is set to wrap up in three months. Its findings will feed into a fresh action plan focused on delivering real, meaningful improvements in veterans’ welfare.

UK veterans deserve the best. This review aims to make sure they get it.
