Predator Jason Sweeney Jailed for Over Four Years
Jason Sweeney, 25, from Southend’s Chelmsford Avenue, has been locked up for four years and three months. The culprit showed shocking predatory behaviour and repeatedly flouted a court order imposed by Essex Police’s MOSOVO unit (Management of Sexual Offenders and Violent Offenders).
Early Warnings Ignored
Essex Police first flagged Sweeney in 2020 due to worrying conduct around children and vulnerable adults. He was slapped with a Child Abduction Notice – a tool to curb dangerous adults early.
Despite this, Sweeney broke a Sexual Harm Prevention Order and failed to comply with sexual offender notification rules. A routine check on 28 August 2020 led to his arrest on suspicion of six breaches plus two counts of non-compliance. Police uncovered evidence of sexual offences against children during the investigation.
Crimes, Convictions and Courting More Trouble
Sweeney faced eight charges related to the breaches. He also groomed a girl under 16, engaging in sexual communication and meetings after grooming. He pleaded guilty and served eight months.
Shockingly, just two weeks after release on licence in February 2021, Sweeney dived right back into dangerous grooming. MOSOVO’s risk assessment found he was targeting a young female victim almost immediately. Police swiftly arrested him again for breaches, recalling him to prison where he remained on remand.
Harsh Sentence and Life Notifications
On 30 September 2022, Basildon Crown Court handed Sweeney a hefty sentence of four years and three months. He is now subject to a lifetime Sexual Offender Notification and an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order.
“It was clear to our team how much of a risk Sweeney posed to young, vulnerable women. He used social media platforms, including Instagram, to target his victims, and has proven himself to be a dangerous sexual offender,” said Detective Andrew Hill.
“This investigation was complex. We worked tirelessly with other forces, including Norfolk Police, to hold Sweeney accountable and protect victims. The dedication of our MOSOVO team ensured swift action, including a nonstop 36-hour shift to get charges authorised and keep him in custody.
“The bravery of the victims in coming forward was crucial. Safeguarding children is our top priority. Offenders often manipulate victims into believing abuse is normal – that’s grooming. Anyone who feels at risk should speak up immediately.”
