Uncle Jailed for Life Over Murder of Bright Young Student

Mohammed Taroos Khan, 53, from Thornbury Road, was convicted yesterday at Bradford Crown Court for the brutal murder of 20-year-old Somaiya Begum. He received a life sentence with a minimum of 25 years behind bars.

Shocking Attack and Callous Cover-Up

Somaiya was savagely attacked at her Binnie Street home on 25 June 2022 by her own uncle, Khan. After the violent assault, he callously dumped her body on wasteland off Fitzwilliam Street where it was discovered by police on 6 July.

Khan pleaded guilty to perverting the course of justice at the start of the trial, highlighting his desperate attempts to hide his crime.

Harrowing Words from Senior Officer

Detective Superintendent Marc Bowes, lead investigator, said:

“Somaiya was a bright young woman studying for her degree, juggling a part-time job and happy at home. She had her whole life ahead of her before it was cruelly cut short by her own uncle—someone who should have cared and protected her.”

“Khan subjected Somaiya to a horrendous attack for reasons only he knows. His callous act of dumping her body in wasteland shows his complete disregard for human life, hoping she would never be found.”

“We were able to present clear and compelling evidence proving Khan was responsible for her death. He has stolen the life Somaiya should have lived and will now pay the price in prison.”

“Our thoughts remain with Somaiya’s loved ones. We hope this conviction brings them some justice.”

“Women have the right to be safe and feel safe. The CPS is committed to holding violent offenders to account.”
