Bootle Burglar Busted: Jake Mawhinney Jailed for Four Years

Jake Mawhinney, 23, from Bootle but currently homeless, has been locked up for four years after a spree of break-ins across the north. The Liverpool Crown Court sentenced him on Monday 5 December following his guilty plea to conspiracy to commit burglary.

Five-Day Crime Spree Hits Three Towns

Between 20 and 24 March 2022, Mawhinney unleashed chaos across the region with four daring offences. It began on Sunday 20 March in Clacton-le-Moors, where he smashed into a home on Paynter Close and stole a prized Audi.

The next day, he hit Warrington, breaking into a home on Warrington Road. He nicked car keys from the driveway but couldn’t steal the vehicle because it was blocked by other cars.

Never giving up, Mawhinney struck again at a property on Manchester Road, Warrington, making off with a Volkswagen Golf. His final raid was on Wednesday 23 March, when he pinched a Mercedes AMG from a house on Limetree Avenue.

High-Tech Evidence Cracks the Case

Mawhinney’s run came to an end thanks to ANPR and mobile phone data that pinned him to the crimes. Police nabbed him on 8 June, and he was charged shortly after.

Police Praise Sentence as Justice Served

“Mawhinney is a prolific offender and I welcome the sentence that has been handed to him by the courts,” said Police Constable Neil Mooney.

“Burglary is a horrific offence. To wake up and find an intruder inside your home—your safe space—is something no one should face. Thanks to the evidence, Mawhinney had no choice but to plead guilty and now faces the consequences.

“I hope this sentence brings closure to the victims and the community. Let it also serve as a warning to those thinking of coming to Cheshire to commit crime.”
