Random Punch Outside Printworks Kills Dad on Wife’s Birthday

Kevin Wood, 60, was fatally punched by 23-year-old Callum Crosbie outside the Printworks on Dantzic Street, Newcastle city centre last November. Kevin had just arrived to celebrate his wife Debbie’s birthday when the tragic attack unfolded.

Kevin had hoped to enjoy a birthday meal with Debbie at the Printworks after 8pm on Saturday 20 November. But moments before going inside, a disturbance broke out near the entrance, ending in disaster. Crosbie, who had been thrown out of nearby O’Neills bar with friends, suddenly launched a brutal, unprovoked punch to Kevin’s face as he tried to speak with security.

Violent Outburst Ends in Tragedy

Crosbie and his mates were kicked out of the bar after refusing to vacate their table. Security staff formed a line at the Printworks entrance to block their way back in, leading to a violent confrontation. Kevin Doherty and Alan Foster, both Newcastle locals involved in the fracas, later pleaded guilty to affray and received short prison sentences.

During the chaos, Crosbie, who tested positive for cocaine that night, was filmed kicking and striking security personnel before delivering the fatal blow to Kevin’s left cheek. Kevin collapsed to the ground, with security catching him as he fell. Emergency teams rushed to resuscitate him, but he was pronounced dead at the scene just after 9pm.

Devastated Wife’s Plea: Think Before You Throw a Punch

“Kevin was a hardworking man who gave us everything,” Debbie Wood said. “He had a brilliant sense of humour and was my soulmate, best friend, and husband all in one. We’ll never forget that night – our lives will never be the same. One punch caused so much pain to a family.”

“Every day I wake up hoping it was a dream. It’s heartbreaking not just for us but also, I’m sure, for Crosbie’s family.”

“We went out to celebrate a birthday and only one of us came home. I urge anyone thinking of throwing a punch to stop. You don’t know the damage you can do to someone’s life and their family.”

“Kevin’s daughter will grow up without her dad. He’s missed every milestone in her life and won’t see her walk down the aisle. These assaults have to stop.”

Seven Years for Manslaughter

Kevin had recently beaten prostate cancer and spent the day fixing a leak at their home before the fatal night out. Debbie now regrets changing plans from Middleton to Manchester, wishing Kevin was still with them.

Crosbie was sentenced to seven years in prison for manslaughter at Manchester Crown Court on 10 June, following a detailed investigation by GMP’s Major Incident Team. CCTV footage and witness statements played a key role.

Senior Investigating Officer Detective Inspector Mark Davis said: “This tragic incident has devastated a family because of one fatal punch by Crosbie. Kevin was a bystander who died doing nothing wrong.”

“This should remind everyone that a single punch can kill. Kevin is one of many victims, and we urge people to think twice before resorting to violence.”

“Crosbie now faces time behind bars, away from his family, to reflect on his actions.”
