Gun Shock in Watford: Two Men Arrested After Van Abandoned with Shotgun Inside

In the early hours of 27 May 2021, police were called to Blackford Road, Watford, after a van was found abandoned in a driveway. Neighbours reported seeing two men exit the vehicle and overheard them discussing a gun being fired.

Police Find Shotgun and Ammo Inside Van

Officers quickly located the two men at a nearby property. They refused to cooperate and gave false information about the van’s ownership. Both were arrested on suspicion of taking a vehicle without consent.

When police searched the van, they discovered a live shotgun and several rounds of ammunition. The suspects were also arrested for possession of a firearm and ammunition without a license.

Watford Men Charged and Sentenced at St Albans Crown Court

  • Robert Dean, 35, Watford: Charged with possessing a prohibited firearm and ammunition without a certificate. He received a 24-month suspended sentence, having already been on remand since December 2022.
  • Jamie Harrowell, 37, Sandridge: Found guilty of multiple firearm offences including possessing a firearm with intent to endanger life. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison plus five years on licence.

Detective Warns on Firearm Crime

“Harrowell had an extensive criminal history with serious offences, which is reflected in his sentence,” said Detective Constable Rob King. “I hope he uses his time in prison to reflect. This sentence sends a strong message to anyone involved in firearms crime — a lengthy stretch behind bars awaits.”

“Unlawful possession of firearms is a grave public danger, especially when discharged in public,” added DC King. “Thankfully, no one was hurt when this gun was fired inside the vehicle. Such behaviour will not be tolerated and we remain committed to bringing offenders to justice.”

DC King thanked the vigilant member of the public who reported the suspicious van, urging others to do the same to help prevent serious harm in their communities.
