Australia Nabs UK Fugitive in High-Stakes Extradition Sting
The AFP launched a manhunt after the UK requested extradition. Teaming up with AUSTRAC, Australia’s financial watchdog, the Fugitive Apprehension Strike Team (FAST) tracked down the suspect’s location and workplace.
On December 15, 2022, the AFP swooped and arrested the man, placing him in custody. Months later, on March 17, 2023, he was handed over to the Metropolitan Police Service and flown to the UK to face charges.
AFP Warns Fugitives: Australia Is No Safe Haven
“Australia is not a safe place to hide,” AFP Assistant Commissioner Kirsty Schofield declared. “We have a proven record of tracking down alleged criminals and sending them home to face justice.”
Schofield praised international law enforcement links as vital, saying, “Trusted partnerships with overseas agencies are key to protecting the Australian community.”
FAST Targets Serious Criminals — No Escape
The FAST team focuses on those wanted for murder, sex offences, drug trafficking, money laundering, and major fraud.
The AFP worked hand-in-hand with UK authorities and the Australian Attorney-General’s Department to ensure the swift extradition.
