Brutal Attack on Pregnant Woman Ends in Baby’s Death
Asa Davison, 35, has been sentenced to at least 12 years in prison after a savage assault on his heavily pregnant girlfriend in Gillingham, Dorset, in 2020.
Jealous Rage Over Baby That Wasn’t His
Bournemouth Crown Court heard Davison lost his temper because the woman was carrying another man’s child conceived before their relationship began. The victim was 29 weeks pregnant when he viciously attacked her on the street on 29 May 2020.
She suffered multiple injuries, including a fist-sized bruise on her abdomen and a fractured eye socket. Tragically, the unborn baby died following the assault.
“Prolonged Assault” Fueled by Hatred
Prosecutor Sarah Jones QC told the court Davison launched a “prolonged assault” because “he wanted that baby dead.” Witnesses described how he kicked the woman and treated her “like a dog.”
Davison was also found guilty of additional offences, including assault occasioning actual bodily harm and perverting the course of justice later that year.
History of Violence and Court Drama
At the time of the attack, Davison was out on licence for an earlier conviction of assaulting a pregnant ex-girlfriend by kicking her in the stomach.
Representing himself via video link during sentencing, Davison claimed he never intended to kill anyone and complained of an unfair trial before storming out.
Mrs Justice Cutts slammed Davison’s “violent and controlling nature,” saying his “resentment simmered and exploded into violence.” She stressed the victim was “heavily pregnant and vulnerable.”
Davison must serve a minimum of 12 years in jail, minus 475 days already spent in custody, before he can apply for parole.
