Random Killer Jailed for Life Over Brutal Murder of Michael Lavery
Patrick Beckley, 32, with no fixed address, was handed a life sentence with a minimum of 21 years in prison at Croydon Crown Court on Monday, 25 October. He was convicted of the murder of Michael Lavery, plus assault charges involving two other men and an emergency worker.
Victim Attacked in His Own Home
Michael Lavery, 59, was viciously assaulted inside his Coulsdon home on Reddown Road on 16 October 2020. Police and ambulance crews rushed to the scene at 9:27pm after reports of a seriously injured man.
Michael was found with severe head injuries and stab wounds. Despite desperate attempts to save him, he was pronounced dead shortly after 10pm. The post-mortem confirmed he died from blunt force trauma and stabbing.
Beckley Caught Near Scene After Random, Drug-Fuelled Attack
Beckley was quickly arrested close to the home. Police probe revealed the attack was random. Beckley, believed drunk or high at the time, also assaulted another man and an emergency worker.
There was no prior connection between Beckley and Michael, and no clear motive has ever been established.
Judge and Police Praise Efforts, Family Mourns
“Beckley is a dangerous and violent offender and will now serve a substantial amount of time in prison following this horrendous crime,” said Detective Sergeant Jason Crinnion of the Specialist Crime South Area.
“Michael was no threat at all that day. Beckley’s attack was random and violent, leaving Michael’s family devastated.”
A family spokesperson said: “Our dad was an incredibly kind, generous, lovely man. He was a wonderful dad and granddad. He is missed terribly every day and will forever be dearly loved.”
“We are grateful to the police for their thorough investigation which ultimately brought the offender to justice.”
The judge also commended officers’ valiant efforts at the scene and the diligent police investigation that secured Beckley’s conviction.
