Knife-Wielding Predator Gets Nearly 7 Years for Chilling Bolton Attack
Jonathan Kabala, 6ft 9in tall and prowling the streets of Bolton, was slapped with a hefty 6 years and 9 months behind bars. The Bolton Crown Court found him guilty of kidnapping with intent to commit a sexual offence, threatening someone with a bladed article, and possession of a bladed article.
Morning Walk Turns Into Nightmare
It was just before 7am on Friday 2 October 2020 when Kabala spotted his victim — a young woman in her 20s — walking to work along Silverwell Street. He stalked her, creeping close from behind.
As she passed church grounds, Kabala lunged and dragged her into a hidden bushy area. He shoved her to the ground. Terrified, she thought she was about to be robbed, and scrambled to offer him money.
Kabala rejected the cash, pulling out a knife and pressing it against her neck. In a desperate struggle, she struck him with a travel mug she’d been carrying, managing to fight back.
Heroic Bystanders Save the Day
Kabala muffled her screams by forcing his hand over her mouth. But she broke free and tried to run—only to be dragged down again. Luckily, nearby a man and woman heard her cries. The brave couple rushed in and called the police.
Seizing the moment, the victim grabbed the knife from Kabala and threw it away. Kabala, surprisingly calm, then stood up and fled the scene.
Throughout the ordeal, Kabala repeatedly grabbed the victim’s trousers, cementing his vile intent.
Police Praise Victim’s Bravery as Predator Is Busted
After scouring CCTV footage, detectives tracked Kabala to several Bolton locations and arrested him.
“This was a terrifying ordeal for the victim, just on her way to work. I commend her bravery defending herself,” said DC Fairbrother of GMP’s Bolton CID. “Thanks also to the man and woman whose swift intervention stopped this horrific assault.”
“Kabala roamed the streets looking for a target. When caught, he bizarrely claimed it was a ‘game’ that ended when the victim grabbed the knife. He was the only one playing that twisted game. We’re glad he’s off the streets.”
