Jealousy Turns Deadly in Tottenham Shooting
Louis Kelly, 40, of Belgrave Gardens, NW8, was sentenced to a minimum of 12 years behind bars for the murder of Mark McCann-Barrett. The chilling crime unfolded in a Lansdowne Road residential block in Tottenham back in September 2019.
Gunfire in Stairwell Leaves Father of Four Fighting for Life
On the morning of 17 September 2019, police were called to reports of a man shot in a stairwell. Mark McCann-Barrett, 33, a devoted father from Waltham Cross, had been hit by five bullets in both legs. Emergency services rushed to the scene, and Mark was rushed to an East London hospital.
Despite efforts to save him, Mark died nearly two weeks later, on 30 September. A post-mortem confirmed his cause of death as complications from blood loss and brain injury caused by the gunshot wounds.
Lover’s Triangle Sparks Deadly Shooting
The court revealed a bitter love triangle was at the heart of the tragedy. Kelly discovered his girlfriend had been seeing Mark. After finding proof on her phone, Kelly invited Mark to stay at his flat on Lansdowne Road. However, a violent argument erupted overnight, culminating with Mark being shot.
Mark managed to crawl to the stairwell where neighbours found him seriously injured hours later. Kelly fled but was caught 10 days later in west London, arrested on suspicion of attempted murder—later upgraded to murder after Mark’s death.
Police and Family Speak Out on Tragic Killing
“It is concerning that we so often see such extreme violence being considered as an acceptable response to conflict,” said Detective Chief Inspector Neil John. “There is simply no justification for taking the life of another.”
“Had Kelly not had a gun, Mark might still be alive today.”
In a heartfelt victim impact statement, Mark’s mother declared: “Mark was a loving partner and father. His whole world revolved around his children, my grandchildren. I will never forgive the person who did this to Mark. He has taken away the father of my four grandchildren whilst they were still so young.”
Five other men arrested in connection with the shooting were later released without charge.
