A Man Has Been Sentenced To Over 20 Years In Jail For The Attempted Murder Of A Man Following An Incident In Clare In March Last Year

Man Jailed for 24 Years After Axe Attack at Clare Pub

Axe Attack at Bell Hotel Shocks Suffolk Town

David Perry, 40, from St Margarets Place in Stradishall, was slapped with a 24-year jail sentence at Ipswich Crown Court today. The brutal sentencing comes after Perry was found guilty of attempting to murder a 37-year-old man in Clare back on 19 March 2022.

It all kicked off at 8.16pm when police were called to the Bell Hotel on Market Hill, following reports that a man had been hacked with an axe.

Dispute Ignites Deadly Assault

The violence erupted after a row inside the pub between Perry and the victim’s friends. Perry was ordered out but shockingly, he stormed back a short while later and launched the attack. The victim suffered serious head injuries and was rushed to Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge for emergency treatment.

Swift Arrest and Court Drama

Police nabbed Perry the very next day in Bury St Edmunds. Initially arrested for grievous bodily harm with intent, he was later hit with the more serious charge of attempted murder. Perry admitted to carrying an offensive weapon and wounding with intent but denied trying to kill.

He received an 18-month term for the weapon possession, to be served at the same time as his hefty 24-year sentence for the attack.

Police Praise Hard Work Behind the Case

“It is very gratifying to see Perry receive this sentence,” said PC Jacqueline Isobel White of Suffolk Constabulary’s West CID. “The victim is lucky to have survived this cowardly attack which has impacted his friends, family, and all those who witnessed it. I would like to thank all the officers and members of police staff whose hard work has helped to secure this result.”
