Predator Jailed for Brutal Attempted Rape on City Road
Istvan Stoberl tried to rape a woman in her 50s one afternoon last October on City Road. Two brave passersby saw the attack and quickly called the police, who arrested Stoberl at the scene.
Evidence Led to Quick Guilty Plea
Northumbria Police’s Safeguarding Unit launched a tough investigation. With overwhelming evidence against him, the 29-year-old Stoberl pleaded guilty to attempted rape in December at Newcastle Crown Court.
Five Years Behind Bars and Lifetime Sex Offender Registration
Yesterday, Stoberl was sentenced to five years in prison. Detective Lee Boys praised the victim for her courage in fighting back against the attacker. Tragically, the victim died from an unrelated medical issue before seeing justice served.
“This has been a tragic case and utterly heartbreaking that the victim did not get to see justice being served,” said Det Con Boys. “I hope this can give some closure to her family. Stoberl is a dangerous and vile predator, but thanks to the victim’s bravery, he is behind bars today.”
Deportation and Call for Other Victims to Speak Out
Stoberl, who lives in Jubilee View, Newcastle, has also been ordered to sign the Sex Offenders’ Register for life and will be deported back to Hungary once his sentence is served.
Detectives urge anyone who has suffered sexual assault to come forward. You can report anonymously via the Tell Us Something page on the Northumbria Police website or call 101. Support and advice are also available online.
