Bognor Burglar Boozed Up Police Act to Rob Elderly
James Beaney, 45, has been nabbed for tricking elderly victims in a string of distraction burglaries across Bognor Regis and nearby Pagham. The shameless crook preyed on vulnerable pensioners by posing as an undercover police officer to get inside their homes and steal valuables.
Fakes Police ID, Steals Wallet from 92-Year-Old
On the evening of May 16, Beaney knocked on the door of an 89-year-old man in Bognor and claimed he needed to search the home after a recent burglary. He left empty-handed but was later picked out by the victim during an ID parade.
The very next night, Beaney struck again, targeting a 92-year-old woman in Pagham. Using the same police scam, he got inside and made off with her wallet stuffed with cash and a bank card.
Crook Caught on CCTV, Jailed for Four Years
Investigators tracked the stolen bank card being used to buy food and booze locally. CCTV footage caught Beaney red-handed.
He was arrested and charged with burglary, attempted theft, and fraud offences. Beaney pleaded guilty at Portsmouth Crown Court on June 17 and was locked up for four years.
“Beaney preyed on vulnerable elderly residents and lied, saying undercover cops don’t carry ID, just to get in,” said Detective Constable Gaye Moore. “Thanks to quick witness action, we caught him. Justice is served.”
Police Warn to Stay Vigilant
Detectives urge the public to be wary of unexpected callers claiming to be police. “Always ask for ID and don’t be scared to check it. Genuine officers won’t mind waiting outside,” Moore added.
Officers are still probing other distraction burglaries in the area between March 19 and April 24, involving thefts of cash and jewellery.
