Man Jailed for Attacking Police Dog in Shocking Colchester Incident
A thug who violently attacked a police dog in Colchester has been convicted of causing unnecessary suffering to an animal. Niall Martin, 29, admitted grabbing the police dog’s throat and yanking at her mouth during a dramatic arrest.
Martin’s Violent Outburst Caught on Scene
It all went down on 22 January 2019. Police Dog Ivy and handler PC Sophie Chesters were called to a domestic disturbance on Blackthorne Avenue just before 10:30pm. Martin was seen running and tried to escape by climbing a fence—only to be caught by Ivy.
But Martin didn’t go down easy. While officers tried to arrest him, he broke free and ran again, only to be tackled by Ivy once more. That’s when he attacked the brave dog, ripping her mouth open and choking her. PC Chesters and special constables quickly stepped in to make the arrest, later finding Martin was also in possession of cannabis.
Justice Served with Suspended Sentence and Fines
- Martin was handed a 10-week prison sentence, suspended for 12 months.
- He was ordered to pay £300 court costs, a £115 victim surcharge, and £50 compensation.
- He must complete a 19-day programme and 30 days of rehabilitation activity.
- Additionally, he received a £150 fine for breaching a domestic violence protection order.
Hero Police Dog Ivy Retires with Honour
“Police Dog Ivy retired earlier this month and she is happily settled into home life with me and my family,” said PC Sophie Chesters.
“Despite being attacked, Ivy did her utmost to protect me while detaining Martin. She remains a well-balanced and sociable dog, and I’m proud of what she achieved during her career and that night.”
“Just days after the attack, Ivy caught a fleeing burglar in Colchester and now enjoys the luxuries of retirement—living like the princess she is.”
Police Praise Ivy’s Bravery and Condemn Martin’s Actions
Chief Inspector Shaun Kane said: “This was a particularly cruel attack on a police dog, who are not just animals—they’re staff and part of our policing family.”
“I am immensely proud of the police response on the day and the bravery shown by all involved. PD Ivy acted with unwavering loyalty to protect her handler and the public.”
