Drunk Driver Attacks Cop After High-Speed Chase in Southmead

Thomas Dunn, 37, from Pilning, didn’t just run from cops—he punched one during the chase in February. The officer suffered a nasty cut above his eye and needed hospital treatment but has thankfully made a full recovery.

26 Weeks Inside and Three-Year Driving Ban for Dunn

Dunn was caught driving over the legal alcohol limit before ditching his car in Charis Avenue, Southmead. At bristol/" title="Bristol" data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">Bristol Magistrates’ Court on 14 November, he pleaded guilty to both drunk driving and assault causing actual bodily harm.

  • Sentenced to 26 weeks in jail
  • Disqualified from driving for three years
  • Ordered to pay £156 compensation

Police Praise Officer’s Bravery, Condemn Attack

“Officers protecting our communities should not have to face this kind of behaviour, but unfortunately all too often they do,” said Insp Jon Hill. “This sentence reflects the seriousness of these appalling and unacceptable crimes and that they will not be tolerated.”

Avon and Somerset Police Federation vice-chair Iain Prideaux added, “Quick thinking, unrelenting in duty and professionalism cost the officer a significant cut above the eye and the residents of Avon and Somerset should be rightly outraged.
