Mum Admits Manslaughter of Toddler After Shocking Cardiff Tragedy
Natalie Steele, 32, from Broadlands, Bridgend, has pleaded guilty to manslaughter by diminished responsibility over the death of her toddler son, Reid Steele.
Reid Dies After Horrifying Incident at Home
Reid died at the University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff, on 12 August last year—just one day after being found injured in his bathroom. The little boy was discovered unresponsive by his grandmother, having been submerged in water on the bathroom floor.
Emergency services rushed Reid to hospital, where scans were performed, but sadly, he passed away the following day. The inquest revealed he died from cardiac arrest due to “hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy.”
Mental Health Issues at Centre of Case
At Cardiff Crown Court, Steele appeared via video link from a psychiatric unit. The court heard that she suffered from psychosis and psychotic depression at the time of the offence. Two expert psychiatrists, Dr Huckle and Dr Wynne, submitted reports confirming her diminished responsibility. Prosecutor Michael Jones QC confirmed the prosecution accepted her plea.
“Although fit to stand trial, at the time she was suffering from a psychosis and psychotic depression,” said Mr Jones.
Judge Michael Fitton QC backed the prosecution’s position, calling the circumstances “tragic” and praising the expert reports.
“The nature and extent of her illness is obvious to anyone who has read those reports,” said the judge. “I urge you to fully co-operate with the psychiatrists.”
Steele has been remanded in custody and will be sentenced on 3 May.
Family Pay Heartbreaking Tribute
Reid’s family described him as a “super-happy, gorgeous, wonderful and intelligent little boy who lit up everyone’s lives.” They fondly recalled how he loved the garden and beach, picking raspberries and collecting shells during walks. “He was a very chatty little boy and would happily speak to anyone,” they said.
Bridgend council leader Huw David expressed the shock and sadness felt in the community, calling Reid’s death “extremely distressing and traumatic.”
