Protester Throws Bottle, Splits Cop’s Head at Trafalgar Square Rally
Gary Bridgett, 51, launched a bottle at a police officer’s head during a chaotic protest in Trafalgar Square on September 26, 2020. PC Hunter was left with a nasty gash that needed stitches after the attack.
Bridgett Admits GBH and Assault on Two Officers
At Westminster Magistrates’ Court, Bridgett pleaded guilty to inflicting grievous bodily harm on PC Hunter. He also admitted assaulting another officer, known only as PS Lock, who was hit with the same bottle.
The protest was organised by controversial figure Piers Corbyn, stirring tensions on the day.
Suspended Jail Sentence and Damages for Violent Offender
Magistrate Ms Bakhshi Suki slammed the “extremely serious” offences and declared custodial sentencing was the only suitable option. However, Bridgett was handed a six-month prison term, suspended for 12 months.
- Ordered to pay £300 in damages to PC Hunter
- Ordered to pay £100 to PS Lock
- Must complete 30 days rehabilitation
The suspended sentence gives Bridgett a chance to stay out of jail — but only if he keeps out of trouble.
