Serial Shoplifter Nabbed After Vacuum Heist
Nathan Smith, 28, was caught on CCTV snatching a vacuum cleaner from Tesco in Mansfield on Tuesday, January 3, 2023.
Thief Hits Tesco Multiple Times in January
Smith didn’t stop there. He also swiped alcohol, an iron, and an air fryer from the same Tesco store on January 7, 16, and 20. The string of thefts didn’t end at Tesco. The repeat offender also stole food from Aldi and Farmfoods nearby.
Criminal Record & Court Sentence
With several prior shoplifting convictions, Smith – who has no fixed address – pleaded guilty to six counts of theft at Mansfield Magistrates’ Court on Thursday. He was sentenced to 36 weeks in jail.
Police Crackdown on Repeat Offenders
Mansfield police are zeroing in on a small group responsible for most shop thefts. Repeat offenders like Smith are under close watch, facing tough court order bans from certain areas.
Inspector Kylie Davies, district commander for Mansfield, said: “Tackling shoplifting is a key local priority for us and we are working hard with our partners to reduce the impact on local businesses. People like Smith cause considerable damage to these businesses and we will hold them to account.”
