Prisoner Bites Off Officer’s Thumb in Brutal HMP Swaleside Attack
Russell Harris, 50, was slapped with an 18-month jail term on 27 July 2021 at Maidstone Crown Court after admitting to actual bodily harm and multiple offences involving weapons in prison.
Violent Assault on Prison Officer
While serving time at HMP Swaleside, Harris viciously attacked a prison officer on 27 May 2019. When staff tried to search his cell, he refused and lashed out, biting off the tip of an officer’s thumb. The injury was so severe it caused a fracture requiring hospital treatment.
Hidden Weapons Discovered
The trouble began on 15 May when officers detected a fermenting liquor smell in Harris’ cell. A search revealed six homemade weapons cleverly hidden under a pillow, on shelves, and in clothing.
Despite the initial find, staff suspected more weapons were stashed away. Their return on 27 May confirmed those fears when another improvised weapon was uncovered.
Zero Tolerance for Prison Violence
“This type of behaviour is unacceptable and will not be tolerated,” said Detective Constable I Hearn. “Prison officers know the risks but must feel safe in their role. Physical assaults like this have serious consequences.”
Harris’ sentencing is a stark warning to inmates who think violence behind bars will go unpunished.
