Man Jailed for Raping Woman in Canterbury After Night Out in Margate

Kieran Champion’s night out took a dark turn after meeting a woman in Margate in July 2018. The pair returned to his home on Merchants Way, Canterbury. But when the woman rejected his advances, things turned sinister.

After she told Champion he wasn’t her type and went to sleep on a chair, she woke up to find him raping her.

Swift Arrest After Woman Calls Police

The victim escaped the property and immediately called Kent Police. Officers arrested Champion the same day. Forensic evidence shattered his claims of innocence, leading to charges of rape and sexual assault.

The 28-year-old was found guilty on both counts at Canterbury Crown Court on 20 September 2021. He was jailed for six years on 4 October 2021.

Police Pledge Justice and Support for Victims

“Kent Police takes violence against women extremely seriously and is committed to bringing those who commit sexual offences to justice,” said Detective Constable Matthew Herriott.

“These offences have a long-term impact on the victim. Champion’s denial dragged the case to trial, prolonging her suffering. I hope the sentence gives her a sense that justice has been done.”

Detective Herriott urged victims to come forward: “If you’ve been a victim of a sexual offence, contact Kent Police immediately. We’ll protect you and work to keep offenders off the streets.”
