Speeding Fugitive Smashes Into Traffic at Red Light – Victims Left Fighting for Life
High-Speed Police Chase Ends in Horror Crash
Ty Chapman, 26, tore through a red light junction on the wrong side of the road before crashing into stationary traffic. The incident happened just before 6:45pm on Sunday, August 30, 2020, moments after police spotted him driving a silver Honda Civic with false plates on the A611 Derby Road near Annesley.
Officers on routine patrol tried to pull him over, but Chapman slammed his foot down and sped off towards Mansfield, reaching over 100mph while the police scrambled to catch up.
Deadly Recklessness at Coxmoor Lane
As Chapman approached the junction with Coxmoor Lane, he swerved dangerously to the right, overtaking a line of vehicles waiting at the red light. Driving on the wrong side, he crashed head-on into cars on the opposite side.
A terrified witness later told police she “closed her eyes and waited to die” as Chapman came hurtling over the brow of a hill towards her.
Multiple Victims Suffer Life-Changing Injuries
- A woman suffered fractures to her back, arm, and ribs.
- Chapman was trapped in the driver’s seat with a fractured back.
- His male passenger endured a broken back and needed surgery for a bowel injury.
Chapman Faces Justice
The Forest Town man pleaded guilty to two counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, driving without a valid licence or insurance, and providing false vehicle keeper details. Toxicology showed he was almost double the legal cannabis limit. This was treated as an aggravating factor during sentencing.
Chapman was slammed with two and a half years in prison, plus a further two months for falsifying information, by Nottingham Crown Court yesterday.
Case Investigator Louise Melbourne said: “This was an absolutely terrifying experience for Chapman’s innocent victims. Several of them really are lucky to be alive. His driving showed a chilling disregard not only for other road users but also for his passenger.”
“Had he just pulled over this never would have happened. Now he faces jail time and victims are left with life-long physical and mental scars.”
“I also want to thank members of the public who helped the injured and assisted police during the investigation.”
