Teen Hero Joel Wins Big for Mental Health Volunteering

At just 18, Joel Bailey is already a local legend in Mansfield. Every Thursday, this health and social care college student dedicates his time to Jigsaw, a mental health charity tackling hoarding and other issues. Over the past two years, Joel has volunteered tirelessly, lending an ear and a helping hand to those struggling with mental health challenges.

A Passion, Not a Job

Joel’s volunteering journey began in care homes, where he discovered his love for helping others. He said, “Volunteering isn’t a job for me, it doesn’t feel like something I have to do, I just really enjoy it and it’s more of a passion.” His commitment only grew stronger after joining Jigsaw and teaming up with charity head Alison Waring.

  • Runs a college food bank, raising tonnes of donations
  • Supports veterans, the elderly, and local mental health groups
  • Helps clients with hoarding and gardening problems in their homes

Praise from Charity Boss and Community

Alison Waring credits Joel for making serious strides in community mental health. “He’s the best student I’ve ever had,” she said. “Joel arrives at 6am, comes in school holidays, and always goes the extra mile. He’s natural with people, caring, and non-judgemental.”

She added, “Older clients love working with him. It’s a two-way street—he helps with tech, and they teach him gardening and chess. Joel tackles everything, from the mental health support group to outdoor allotments and home visits.”

Inspiration to All Ages

Joel took home the Bringing People Together Award 2023, part of Nottinghamshire Police’s 1 Our Best Life Awards celebrating young local heroes. Youth Outreach worker Romel Davis said, “Joel’s dedication, even during school holidays, inspires people of all ages. The adults who come to Jigsaw’s sessions adore him. He’s a role model and truly deserves this recognition.”

Joel’s extraordinary work proves one young man can make a massive difference. The future looks bright with heroes like him on the frontline of mental health support.
