Driver Caught! McCreadie Jailed for Knifepoint Robbery Spree
Three Men Armed with Knives Terrorise Sheerness
On 20 March 2021, James McCreadie drove his Peugeot 206 to Sittingbourne railway station. There, he picked up two associates from London, Alfie Spain and Freddie Hanratty. The trio armed themselves with knives, planning a series of terrifying robberies.
McCreadie headed to Sheerness while Spain and Hanratty disguised their faces and wore disposable gloves to avoid detection.
Masks, Knives, and Threats: Robbery Spree in Full Swing
Dropping off Spain and Hanratty in Sheerness, the pair forced entry into a house on Alexandra Road. They threatened a man inside with knives but left empty-handed. Undeterred, they moved on to carry out two more robberies on Victoria Street and Queensway, intimidating occupants each time before jumping back into McCreadie’s waiting car.
Justice Served: Trio Busted and Locked Up
The Chief Constable’s Crime Squad launched an investigation. Spain and Hanratty were arrested on 21 and 29 April respectively. Evidence soon pointed to McCreadie as a key player, leading to his arrest on 17 June 2021. He was charged with conspiracy to rob.
McCreadie, 40, from Linden Road, Sheerness, pleaded not guilty but was convicted at Maidstone Crown Court. On 1 March, he received a hefty seven-year prison sentence.
Spain and Hanratty had already pleaded guilty. Spain was sentenced to eight years and three months, while Hanratty was locked up for six years in a young offenders’ institution.
Police Praise Victims and Witnesses in Bringing Criminals to Justice
Investigating officer PC Emma Laimbeer said: “McCreadie was a key member of the gang and provided the transport for their criminal enterprise. There is no doubt he was aware of their plans and as such should take equal responsibility for the terrible ordeal suffered by the victims. He is now rightfully behind bars, and I would like to thank the victims and witnesses whose assistance ensured these violent men were brought to justice.”
