Violent Chatham Man Jailed After Neck-Grabbing and Spitting on Police Officer
Fury in Chatham: Man Attacks Woman and Police
Christopher Spooner, 39, from Chatham Hill, has been locked up for 14 months after a brutal assault. He grabbed a woman by the neck twice and flung her tablet out of a window. When cops arrived, the violent yob spat in an officer’s face.
Day of Drinking Turns Ugly
Spooner had been drinking heavily on 6 May 2020 when he unleashed aggression on the woman he was with. She managed to escape the house but was grabbed again on the street. Thankfully, a passerby called the police.
Spitting at Police Earns Him Jail Time
Officers found Spooner highly agitated. As they tried to restrain him, he hurled verbal abuse and spat without warning into an officer’s face. He later admitted the spitting and his abusive behaviour while in custody.
Police Praise Officer’s Professionalism
PC Heather Walkden said: “Spooner has proven himself to be a bully who is willing to use violence and verbal threats. The abuse he subjected the victim to was intolerable and I am pleased that the sentence imposed prevents him from causing further harm.Without any provocation, he also spat into the face of one of our officers. Such behaviour is disgusting and thoroughly degrading and despite Spooner’s appalling actions, the patrols responded with incredible professionalism.”
Spooner pleaded guilty at Maidstone Crown Court, activating a suspended sentence. He was remanded and jailed on 9 September for assault, criminal damage, and assaulting an emergency worker.
