Kayakers Stranded on River Medway Island Rescued in Daring Operation
On Saturday 29 January 2022, a group of kayakers found themselves trapped by fierce winds and choppy waves on the River Medway. They ended up stranded on Darnet Ness, a tiny island, and urgently called 999 for help.
Kent Police and RNLI Launch Rescue Mission
Kent Police’s Search and Marine Unit rushed to the scene. Two officers braved thick mud by swimming ashore and trekked 100 metres to reach the stranded group. They checked everyone for injuries.
The RNLI Sheerness Lifeboat also joined the effort, deploying a smaller Rigid Inflatable Boat (RHIB) to get closer to the shore. They safely ferried the kayakers back to Kent Police’s larger RHIB Invicta, capable of carrying all the kayakers and their kayaks.
Safe and Sound Back on Dry Land
With the kayaks in tow, RHIB Invicta returned to Gillingham Marina, where the Coastguard was waiting. Thankfully, no one was hurt during the ordeal.
“Thankfully no one was hurt and the group had the right equipment with them – dry suits, flotation devices, VHF radios and mobile phones, and were able to call for rescue,” said Police Constable Ryan Duffy of Kent Police.
“Even experienced water users can be caught out by strengthening winds and deteriorating weather, and need to have the ability to call for help if needed. I am pleased we were able to work with our partners to safely rescue them.”
