Woman Jailed for Manslaughter After Fatally Stabbing Partner in Rage

Hayley Keating, 32, was sentenced to six years behind bars today at Bristol Crown Court. She was found guilty of manslaughter for the death of her partner, Matthew Wormleighton, in May last year.

Fatal Stabbing in Early Morning Row

Keating called emergency services from their home in Forts Orchard, Chilthorne Domer, at 4:37am on 14 May 2021. During the 999 call, she admitted stabbing Mr Wormleighton and told operators he was dying. She also claimed she threw the knife at him in a fit of rage.

Police reports revealed the couple had been arguing before the tragic incident. Keating followed Mr Wormleighton through the house before stabbing him as he tried to leave.

Judge Rules No Intent to Kill, But Violence Was Deadly

Paramedics found 45-year-old Mr Wormleighton with a critical 10cm stab wound. He was rushed to hospital but died later the same day.

Keating was cleared of murder but convicted of manslaughter. Judge William Hart said she intended to injure but not kill Mr Wormleighton. He added that she was not under immediate threat when she grabbed a knife from the kitchen and stabbed him in anger.

The judge also described their relationship as “toxic.”

Police Tribute to Victim’s Family

“Our thoughts and sympathies go out to Matthew Wormleighton’s family, who continue to suffer the tragic loss of a family man who was clearly hugely loved,” said Detective Chief Inspector Mark Almond. “They have shown incredible courage throughout the police investigation and this trial, and I thank them for their support.”

Jurors confirmed Keating’s actions caused the fatal injuries, leading to significant prison time. The case stands as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of knife violence.
