Woman Sentenced for Killing Newborn in Aldershot
Babita Rai, 24, has been sentenced after killing her newborn baby girl in Aldershot. Following a two-week trial at Winchester Crown Court, she was found guilty of infanticide but cleared of murder on 20 May.
Tragic Discovery and Court Details
Police were called to Manor Park, Aldershot, on 19 May 2017 at around 1.30pm after the baby’s body was found. A post-mortem revealed blunt force trauma to the infant’s head, injuries suffered shortly after birth.
On Monday 26 July, Rai received a 2-year community order plus a 30-day rehabilitation order. She has already served 385 days in custody.
“None of that is to suggest that this is not serious, it was. It resulted in the ultimate harm to a new-born baby. But the mitigation in this case, as in many cases of its type, is overwhelming,” said His Honour Justice Johnson at sentencing.
Police Reveal Heartbreaking Investigation
Detective Chief Inspector Dave Storey described the case as “truly heart-breaking” and admitted he “cannot begin to imagine” what drove Rai to such an extreme act. He urged anyone in similar distress to seek help.
“This was a long and harrowing investigation,” said DCI Storey. “Police visited 1,200 homes, sent out 5,000 questionnaires, and reviewed over 1,000 hours of CCTV to identify the mother.”
“The verdict of infanticide by the jury brings this tragic case to a close, but the death of Baby M will remain a heartbreak for all involved,” he added.
Community Stands Together After Tragedy
Chief Inspector John Halfacre praised the Aldershot and Rushmoor communities for their support. “This was a shocking event. We want to reassure the public that we are here to listen and respond to any concerns,” he said.
This harrowing case highlights the need for awareness and support for mothers facing severe distress.
