Firefighter’s Raw Account of Hellish High-Rise Blaze
One firefighter has spoken out, painting a gripping picture of the chaos inside a towering inferno. His words reveal the courage, heartbreak, and gut-wrenching choices made amid the flames.
Alarm Bells and A Race Against Time
“As always, we were jolted awake by flashing lights and the tannoy screaming our call signs. Heart racing, I glanced at the clock — I’d only been down for less than an hour. Time to see what nightmare awaited us this time.”
Rushing to the trucks, he was stunned by the scale of the incident – a massive fire not even in their usual patch. “We couldn’t get closer than four or five streets from the building. Other crews were setting up water, but the sky was already glowing ominously.”
Into the Fiery Beast
Charged with reaching a flat on the 23rd floor, the crew weighed down with over 30kg of gear battled thick smoke and choking heat. “The stairwells were packed, visibility vanished around the ninth floor, and heat crushed us with every step up. People were stuck, panicking, gasping for life.”
Facing dwindling air supply and desperate cries for help, the firefighter was forced to make agonising decisions. “Five more people were trapped above, but we barely had enough air to stay alive ourselves.”
Heart-Stopping Rescue and Lost Gear
Carrying casualties down the smoke-filled stairs, chaos reigned. “A firefighter had given up his own breathing apparatus to help a victim; he was coughing and delirious but still helping. We pushed down flights of stairs, hearing screams and feeling the urgency.”
Reaching the relative safety of the lower floors, they administered oxygen and prepared to head back up. “The fire was worse than ever when we came out. A man trapped in a high window haunted our thoughts, while frantic calls from trapped families kept us going.”
Endless Heroism, Heavy Toll
The night stretched on with crews risking everything. “Some were rescued alive, others weren’t. Mothers threw babies to strangers for safety. We pushed beyond limits, with 40 fire engines and 20 relief crews arriving as dawn broke.”
Returning to the station after 19 brutal hours, exhaustion set in, but there was no time to rest. “I tried washing the smell of smoke away, but it stuck with me. We sat quietly in a pub, surrounded by laughter and normal life — worlds apart from what we had faced.”
This gripping story is only a glimpse of a night filled with unimaginable bravery and scars that may never fade.
Other Stories Will Come Out
