NHS Terror Threat Foiled: Berlin Man Jailed for £10 Million Bitcoin Ransom Plot

Emil Apreda, 33, living in Berlin, has been nailed as the cybercriminal behind a string of chilling threats to the NHS last year. The National Crime Agency (NCA) launched a high-priority probe after Apreda sent an email demand for £10 million in bitcoin, claiming to represent far-right group Combat18.

Bomb Threat Amid Covid Chaos

  • On April 12, 2020, Apreda used the TOR network to mask his identity while threatening to bomb an unspecified UK hospital.
  • The NHS was overwhelmed dealing with Covid-19 patients relying on oxygen, making the threat catastrophic.
  • Nigel Leary, Deputy Director of the NCA’s National Cyber Crime Unit, said: “For it to be carried out would have been absolutely catastrophic.”

Tech-Savvy Hunt and International Teamwork

The offender’s use of anonymisation made the investigation tough. But cyber experts combed through behavioural and linguistic clues to reveal Apreda’s native German accent behind his English emails. Teaming up with German authorities, they traced the emails to an address in Steglitz, Berlin.

Despite his continued barrage of 18 threatening emails—including plans to attack MPs and bomb Black Lives Matter protesters—the Berlin police stormed Apreda’s flat with explosives and arrested him on June 15.

Justice Served: Three Years Behind Bars

Apreda was convicted at Berlin’s District Criminal Court and sentenced to three years in prison. Nigel Leary praised the outcome:

“Apreda made cynical attempts to bring down our health service when it was at its most vulnerable. The impact of this was huge and it’s only right that he faces jail time.”

The NCA stressed the importance of international cooperation in this cybercrime battle, especially the help from Germany’s LKA and BKA.

An NHS spokesperson added:

“The threat made during the extortion demand significantly added to the pressures on the NHS during the Covid pandemic. It came at a time when hospitals were most vulnerable and could have resulted in significant loss of life.”
