Brutal Bar Brawl: Man Left in Hospital with Fractured Skull After Night Out in Rochester
Late-Night Attack at Eagle Tavern
On Saturday 28 September 2019, a night out in Rochester High Street turned violent. A man in his 40s was enjoying time with friends at the Eagle Tavern when trouble struck just after midnight.
Lewis Hayes, 24, arrived at the pub not long after and was still there when staff closed up. The two men, strangers to each other, reportedly shook hands before things took a sinister turn.
Sudden Assault Leaves Victim Seriously Injured
As the victim turned to leave, Hayes shoved him hard. The man crashed backward onto a table and chairs. Shockingly, Hayes then kicked the victim’s head while he lay helpless on the floor.
Door staff quickly intervened and threw Hayes out, but the damage was done. The victim was rushed to hospital with severe head injuries, including a fractured skull. He remains in serious condition, receiving ongoing care.
Hayes Jailed for Two and Half Years
Medway police launched an investigation. Hayes, from Eden Avenue, Walderslade, was arrested on 1 October and charged with wounding.
At Maidstone Crown Court, Hayes pleaded guilty. On Friday 5 November, he was sentenced to two years and six months behind bars.
Police Praise Witnesses and Family
Detective Sergeant Samantha Stuart, Medway CID, said:
“This was a tragic incident that has left a young man with such appalling injuries that he continues to receive full-time medical care.
“The victim was pushed with sudden and significant force and Hayes must now serve a prison sentence for his actions.
“I would like to commend the victim’s family, friends and the witnesses who have assisted us throughout this investigation.”
