Christmas Drink-Driving Crackdown Nets Nine Arrests

Nottinghamshire Police have smashed drink-driving over the Christmas period as part of their hard-hitting ‘A Deadly Mix’ campaign. On Christmas Day alone, nine drivers were arrested for drink-driving. Eight are now facing court charges, with another caught red-handed on Boxing Day.

Fatal Consequences Fuel Brutal Campaign

The campaign was launched after chilling stats revealed 263 people were injured or killed in drink-related crashes in Nottinghamshire from 2018 to 2020. To raise awareness, the force plastered over 2,000 posters and handed out 5,000 beermats in local pubs. Officers held roadshows in Nottingham’s Trinity Square, directly warning the public about the deadly risks of drink-driving.

Police Warn: One Over-the-Limit Driver Is One Too Many

“Just one drink or drug driver on Nottinghamshire’s roads is one too many,”

said Inspector John Lees.

“Drink and drug drivers will not be tolerated. The choice to drive over the limit takes seconds but can ruin lives forever.”

Lees stressed the crime’s devastating effects, including possible jail, job loss, broken relationships, and losing the freedom to drive.

Heartbroken Widow Makes a Powerful Plea

Clair Osborne, who lost her husband in a drink-driving crash in 2021, is backing the campaign. The 48-year-old from Mansfield Woodhouse urges everyone to plan their journey home on nights out.

“Work dos and Christmas parties are planned events – so plan your taxi or lift home,”

she said.

“If someone offers you a drink when you’re driving, ask yourself: is it worth it? I see every day how drink-driving has shattered my children’s lives.”
