Massive Ship Slams Over at Leith Dock – Multiple Injured
Emergency crews rushed to Imperial Dock at 8:29am on Wednesday after a huge vessel dramatically lurched off its dry dock mooring. The ship, known as the RV Petrel, suddenly tipped towards its right side, sparking panic and chaos.
Major Rescue Operation Underway
The Petrel had been stuck at Leith since 2020, parked there due to pandemic-related problems. But early Wednesday, it broke free from its holding, injuring several people. Paramedics, firefighters, police, and an air ambulance scrambled to the scene in a massive rescue effort.
“Police and emergency services are responding to an incident where a ship on dry dock has become dislodged at Imperial Dock, Leith,” said a Police Scotland spokeswoman. “Officers arrived around 8:35am and remain at the scene. The public should avoid the area to allow emergency access.”
Strong Winds May Have Played a Role
It’s unclear exactly why the vessel came loose, but reports suggest powerful winds could have been the culprit. Those on board described the impact as “terrifying.”
Councilor Adam McVey said: “It was a terrifying incident. My thoughts are with everyone injured.”
Emergency Response: Full Throttle
- Five ambulances and an air ambulance dispatched
- Three trauma teams and three paramedic response units on site
- Special operations team and patient transport also deployed
- Scottish Fire and Rescue Service sent four appliances plus specialist gear
- Police help manage the scene and coordinate support
The dislodged vessel potentially caused serious damage to surrounding dockside areas. Authorities continue investigations as the rescue operation presses on.
