Bromley Cracks Down on Blue Badge Fraud with Record Fines
Bromley Council has launched a fierce legal crackdown on blue badge scammers. In just the first two months of 2024, 24 motorists were hit with fines totalling £16,234 for abusing the scheme designed to help disabled drivers.
Massive Fines and Court Costs Hit Badge Misusers
One offender faced a whopping £1,347 in fines plus court costs, showing Bromley means business against fraudsters. The council revealed that 13 of these cases involved cancelled badges, including some that were stolen, belonged to deceased holders, or were previously cancelled after being reported lost.
Misuse Hurts Genuine Badge Holders
Eleven cases involved drivers failing to provide accurate identification details. Several used stolen badges, and some displayed badges that should not have been in circulation due to death or loss. Bromley Council warned that fraudulent use of blue badges denies genuine disabled people critical parking access.
“We are actively enforcing the blue badge scheme every day, and those tempted to misuse a blue badge should be in no doubt that they will face prosecution,” said a council spokesperson.
The council also stressed that badges must be returned when expired, damaged, or no longer eligible, including after the badge holder’s death.
80 Prosecutions in 12 Months Show Zero Tolerance
Over the past year, Bromley has prosecuted 80 individuals involved in blue badge abuses, underlining the council’s zero-tolerance policy to protect the scheme for disabled drivers who truly need it.
